The Musician (March)

The spring 2019 issue of The Musician magazine, the quarterly publication of the Musicians’ Union, is being dispatched to members this week and once again contains its award-winning mix of profiles, features, reports and advice.

We have a lead interview with LSO violinist Maxine Kwok-Adams; reports on the fourth MU Orchestral Conference and the recent Americana Conference; a piece on the benefits and challenges of streaming classical music; focus items on the music scene in Bristol, the excellent British Association for Performing Arts Medicine, and The Black Box in Belfast; plus advice on hiring a PR and  and what options you have as a musician when being ‘kept on hold’ aka ‘pencilled-in.’

This particular edition also includes a number of important extras.

Delegate Conference insert
This document contains a call for delegate nominations, the Conference motions and the proposed MU Rule changes. Conference will take place in Brighton on 23 July 2019 and members wishing to be nominated to attend on behalf of their MU Region, will find the appropriate form alongside comprehensive details about the event.

Communications Survey insert
Members are being encouraged to complete this survey, which will provide valuable feedback on the Union’s communications and campaigns and help develop our future plans in these areas. Members can choose to complete the survey online, or use the paper insert included with the printed magazine and return this in the reply-paid envelope provided.

We will be emailing all members this evening to promote this survey and the online facility in particular.

Members’ Conference
Also in Brighton, on 24 July 2019, the Union will be hosting its inaugural Members’ Conference. All members are invited to attend and contribute to the Union’s future policies and strategies. Information on this key event can be found in The Musician on pages 26 and 27.  Members will be able to register their interest in attending on a dedicated website from next Thursday, 21 March.

The Musician in digital
Members can now choose to receive The Musician in digital format only, by selecting the appropriate option under ‘Communication Preferences’ when they log into the MU website. We will be emailing those members who have elected to not receive the printed edition with a pdf of the magazine in the next 24 hours.

Audio files are being prepared to distribute the content in suitable format for our visually impaired members. These files will also be loaded on our website and Soundcloud channel in due course.

In line with members’ requests, The Musician will be available as a large print file in 24 point for downloading from our website.

MU office copies are being distributed in keeping with our usual arrangements.
