My son Ben and I joined my MU colleagues outside the Royal Albert Hall this afternoon to hand out leaflets to those attending the BBC’s War Horse Prom. This is the latest action in the Union’s ‘Save the War Horse Band’ campaign, the ongoing fight to save the War Horse band and the livelihoods of the five musicians engaged in the West End production of the show whose contracts were terminated.
The Proms were collaborating for the first time with the National Theatre (NT) for a concert inspired by the award-winning play. The action was part of the Union’s response to comments allegedly made by National Theatre executive director, Nick Starr, who was reported in The Stage as saying that, “We should have axed War Horse musicians in 2009”. Please sign the campaign petition, follow @WeAreTheMU for updates and use #KeepMusicLive on Twitter to spread the word.
