Julie, Ben and I arrived in San Francisco on Friday (1st July) and having collected our Nissan SUV for the duration of our visit, settled in at the Riu Plaza on Mason Street, close to the famous Fishermans Wharf.
This proved a suitable base for touring the city and we took in the business district, Union Square, City Hall and various galleries and cafes. Memorably, our ride on a cable car was interrupted by the chain coming lose! However, a quick push from a bulldozer solved that.
Highlights included a drive over the Golden Gate Bridge and a visit to the attractive small town of Sausalito, the other side of the Bay. I also particularly enjoyed the Haight-Ashbury area, which happily still maintained some of its mid 1960s hippy community feel.
