A fun afternoon at the upstairs theatre in the classic Rosemary Branch pub in Shepperton Road, London N1, courtesy of the superb songwriter Robb Johnson and the cast of his musical drama, Murder at the Grange.
Robb’s story boasts all the time-honoured elements of a British whodunit, set in a manor house during Christmas and featuring a cast of vocalist/guitarist Robb, Sian Allen (trumpet/vocals), John Forrester (double bass/vocals), Fae Simon (vocals) and narrator Roger Stevens.
The action revolves around the alleged murder of Colonel Fitz-Stainsforth and the houseful of suspects, including various members of his family, entourage and investigating detectives.
The telling of the plot by the quintet, amusingly enacted in the style of a radio drama, is interspersed with festive music and a selection of Robb’s fitting songs. All of which keep the audience entertained and engaged in discovering the culprit(s). A series of handouts with details of the Fitz-Stainsforth family tree and notes by one of the investigators add to the mystery.
