My wife Julie and I joined the packed audience at the Roundhouse tonight to catch the main London date of The Waterboys during their world tour. The band, which includes ace UK session drummer Ralph Salmins, ran through a stirring set with great versions of Prince’s Purple Rain, plus the classics: The whole of the moon and Fisherman’s blues. Afterwards it was a pleasure to meet bassist David Hood, who has had a stunning career. Born in Sheffield, Alabama, he started out playing with The Mystics and as a back-up musician at FAME Studios, before going on to found Muscle Shoals Sound Studio where he produced songs for Willie Nelson and Cher amongst others. David has played bass on albums by Boz Scaggs, Cat Stevens, Paul Simon, Bob Seger, Traffic, The Staple Singers, Odetta, John Hiatt, Etta James and Percy Sledge. Our thanks to my nephew Steve for the tickets and to Ralph for the backstage passes.
