I have been heavily involved in organising the biennial delegate conference of the MU this week, with a direct responsibility for hall and room layout, audio-visual facilities, presentations, merchandise and branding. For the first time this year, I was asked to proof read the 300+ page Conference Report, following its meticulous preparation by General Secretary John Smith, and in recent months I have worked alongside colleagues Jane Austin, Lynn Calvin, Isabelle Gutierrez and Maddy Radcliff, to ensure the smooth-running of the event.
Hosted by the Hilton Metropole on the seafront, the Union welcomed numerous members and guests, including Chris Bryant (the Shadow Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport), Kerry McCarthy MP, Kevin Brennan MP, TUC General Secretary Frances O’Grady, UK Music CEO Jo Dipple, PPL CEO Pete Leathem, Benoit Machuel (General Secretary of the International Federation of Musicians), Tino Gagliardi (President and Executive Director of the Associated Musicians of Greater New York, Local 802) and Professor Aaron Williamon of the Royal College of Music. The business of the event was dealt with efficiently by the delegates and the speeches and presentations warmly received.
The communications slot began with the promo video, for which I have acted as Executive Producer and I delighted to report this received many compliments from the audience in the hall. A dinner dance rounded off proceedings on Wednesday evening, with the delegates and visitors entertained by the marvellous covers outfit, The Overtures.
