Following a kind invitation by former MU colleague and trombone session legend Pete Thoms, Julie and I attended a Christmas celebration at the Mildmay Club in Newington Green tonight featuring the Mojo Big Band. Mojo is a swinging, jazz and funk 17-piece big band who play regularly across town.
Their repertoire includes swing, Latin and soul, ranging from traditional charts (Buddy Rich, Count Basie, Duke Ellington) through to the modern (Gordon Goodwin, Michel Camilo, NYJO, Tower of Power).
The line-up on this occasion included Giulia Marelli on vocals and was notable for the dynamic playing of drummer Jakub Rokosz.
Great to see Pete in action, plus meet his bandmate from Landscape days, John Walters.
