Liverpool

A relaxing few days with Julie and Ben in Liverpool, always a great place to visit. We travelled up from Euston to Lime Street on Wednesday and checked into the Hilton City Centre before heading out to explore the legendary city.

Our first walk took in Albert Dock, the Town Hall, Mathew Street and the site of the Cavern, plus the White Star pub where an engaging Irish folk music session was in full swing. The evening included a superb meal at Villa Romana in Wood Street and games of American pool at the Roxy in Hanover Street.

On Thursday we took the Beatles open top bus tour, hosted by the upbeat and informative Damien Ewing, stopping off memorably at Penny Lane and Strawberry Fields. We then had lunch at Revolution in Albert Dock, before visiting the nearby Beatles Story exhibition. After relaxing back at the hotel, we enjoyed pasta at Crust in Bold Street and drinks at Ye Crack in Rice Street in the Georgian Quarter, my favourite area of the city.

On Friday morning we walked up to the amazing Anglican Cathedral to find the 19th July marked the 100th anniversary of its consecration. Such an appropriate day to be there. We then strolled along Hope Street to have lunch at the historic Liverpool Philharmonic in Hope Street, before taking in the stunning views over the city from the viewing gallery in St John’s Beacon (formerly the Radio City tower).

While Ben worked out in the hotel gym, Julie and I then enjoyed drinks in Albert Dock. We spent the early evening at the Roxy once more, prior to a lovely meal at the excellent KO Grill and closing the night out with karaoke at an energised Empire pub!

We said goodbye to the helpful staff at the Hilton on Friday morning before taking a taxi to Lime Street and the train home.

Our many thanks to the people and places of Liverpool, you have been wonderful as ever.
