PPL drinks

A well-established event in the music industry calendar is the PPL Christmas drinks reception in early December. The invite list is increasingly a tightly-edited register and so I was delighted to be asked once again this year, along with my MU colleagues John Smith, Horace Trubridge and the Recording & Broadcasting team.

I requested my work-partner Maddy Radcliff was added at the last minute, so the two of us made our way over from Oval to The Avenue in St James St, SW1.

I have considerably history at the relevant address, as what is now a Manhattan style wine bar and restaurant used to be the West End office of Guardian Royal Exchange – the insurance company for whom I worked from January 1979. My first ever work desk could be found here and so I arranged for PPL’s photographer Hayley Madden to take a picture of me on the same spot. A few names from the past came to mind: Eddie Bose, Trevor Clowes, Cathy Hope and Tony Ford. It seems a very, very long time ago.

Rushing back to the present, it’s always a pleasure to catch up with so many familiar faces. Martin Talbot (Managing Director of the Official Charts Co), David Stark, Paul Scaife of Record of the Day, Music Tank’s Jonathan Robinson, Jonathan Morrish, Peter Leathem (PPL CEO), writer Helliene Lindvall, Tony Moore and so many others. The event featured speeches from Peter and John (Chair of PPL as well as General Secretary of the MU) who looked back over a busy twelve months for the collecting society.

My thanks to the highly-efficient PPL team for a relaxing afternoon.
