Musicians in Whitehall

Musicians in Whitehall

The MU, Equity and Bectu officials and members gathered this morning outside the offices of the DCMS on Whitehall, to voice their anger at the cuts in arts funding for certain organisations announced this month by Arts Council England.

I had driven over from MU HQ in Snowsfields, London Bridge, with our Regional Organiser Jamie Pullman, to deliver flags and A2 message boards for distribution amongst the musicians in attendance.

Passionate speeches were delivered for the next hour by a number of union members – including Glen Sheldon on behalf of the musicians – plus MU General Secretary Naomi Pohl and her Equity equivalent, Paul Fleming.

The event finished with a stirring version of ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ by the ENO Chorus. It was a pleasure to meet Juliet Stevenson and to talk briefly about the importance of the collective unions’ work.
