John Edney

This afternoon I walked from Eden Park to Elmers End, so that I could attend the memorial service to orchestral trombonist, educator and MU activist John Edney at Beckenham Crematorium.

The Chapel was packed with John’s family, friends and a large gathering of musicians, all of whom wished to pay their respects to a true gentleman.  John was always very kind to me and a knowledgeable and supportive touchstone to many colleagues during his time on the Union’s Executive Committee.

I greeted former MU General Secretary and PPL Chair John Smith and his wife Sandra, plus former bassist with the BBC Concert Orchestra, Richard Watson.

A band, totally made up of musicians whom John had taught and inspired, played a suitable set of his favourite material.  I certainly learned a great deal about how important he had been to so many budding musicians, many of whom had turned professional following his tutorship.

The entire service was a fitting tribute to a lovely man.

A full tribute to John can be read on the MU website.
