Folk Arts celebration

The All Party Parliamentary Group for Folk Arts hosted a celebration of folk music in the Jubilee Room at the House of Commons tonight, sponsored by the Radio 2’s Folk Show and the MU. The Union’s Executive Chair, Kathy Dyson, and I joined Rhyl Folk Club – marking its 50th anniversary – in honouring acoustic legend Martin Carthy, the special guest for the event.

Present were Sam Lee, Mercury nominated artist and promoter, Sydney Thornbury of Blackheath’s highly-respected Conservatoire and Kevin Brennan MP for Cardiff West (Chair of the Group and our host and MC for the evening). The audience enjoyed several stirring folk acts from Rhyl, plus a fascinating hour with Martin as he played and sung numbers from his matchless repertoire.
