England v Wales

When the fixtures were announced for the Euro 2016 tournament, I arranged a day’s leave to ensure I could meet up with my longtime England match buddy Peter Brown in town and catch the England v Wales game.

My MU colleague Neil Wright kindly invited us to join him at the Walkabout bar on the Embankment for the afternoon, as his West Ham supporting friend Craig Wood had booked a large table. This proved to be a great choice as we joined a crammed venue of singing England fans in an extremely noisy atmosphere. Armed with jugs of lager, burgers and nachos at our prime spot – complete with a view over the Thames – Peter, Neil and I settled for the match, surrounded by many a Hammers fan. Our hearts sank with Gareth Bale’s successful free kick for Wales, but the introduction of Daniel Sturridge and Jamie Vardy at half-time turned the game in England’s favour, who won with almost the last kick of the match. Cue mass celebrations, more lager and juiced-up singing. Some of us stayed to catch the Northern Ireland victory over Ukraine before Peter and I called it a day and headed over Waterloo Bridge home. Our thanks to Craig for being a wonderful host. Here’s to more of the same!
