David Redfern

I visited Ronnie Scott’s this afternoon to join numerous musicians, journalists and photographers in marking the sad passing of the iconic photographer, David Redfern. One of the world’s most renowned photographers of musicians, especially in the jazz genre, David Redfern (born 1936) worked for 45 years and had over 10,000 pictures in his collection including photos of the Beatles and Jimi Hendrix. In 1980, Refern became the regular tour photographer of Frank Sinatra, at the request of the singer. He also set up a photo agency, which represented his own work, and that of more than 400 photographers who specialised in music related subjects. Redfern sold this agency to Getty Images in 2008. In 1999 he published a book about his life called The Unclosed Eye. Those on stage included the acclaimed trumpeter, composer and arranger Guy Barker and respected double bassist, Geoff Gascoyne. RIP David.
