As part of my son’s 10th birthday celebrations, I bought him tickets for this evening’s AC/DC concert at the Olympic Stadium. So this afternoon we drove to Greenwich and caught the Docklands Light Railway to Stratford and walked to the Stadium surrounded by many a rock fan sporting the obligatory AC/DC t-shirt.
A quick purchase of flashing Devil’s horns and a drink and we climbed the steps to our seats at the back of the arena as the support band – Tyler Bryant And The Shakedown – took to the stage.
After their excellent and vibrant set of original rockers, we got another drink and returned in time to join in the countdown to AC/DC’s blast off with Rock or Bust! The band, fronted by guitar hero Angus Young and substitute vocalist Axl Rose (who was great by the way), ran through their catalogue of live favourites, with Ben particularly enjoying Thunderstruck, TNT, Hell’s Bells, Whole Lotta Rosie and first encore, Highway to Hell. A mid-set pizza gave him a break during the two hour performance, which ended with cannons and the peak send-off of ‘For those about to rock (we salute you).’ For a first-ever concert at the Stadium, it was an enjoyable experience, the only headache being the journey home. The show ended at 10.30pm, yet we only got home at 1am thanks to a slow crawl to the nearest station that was open and cancelled trains. There seemed to be no allowance made for the extra people needing transport away from the arena and it will be interesting to see how the authorities handle rival football fans leaving the Stadium across those narrow bridges next season.
