So many important sites in the development of the contemporary British music scene remain unheralded. One such example is the IBC Recording Studios, which for many years were located at 35 Portland Place. In the 1960s and 1970s, the studios become internationally famous after being the source of timeless recordings by the Kinks (You really got me), the Who (My generation and rock opera Tommy), Jimi Hendrix (Hey Joe), the Bee Gees, Cream and numerous others in a roll call of star names. Even Lonnie Donegan’s ‘My old man’s a dustman’ was recorded there! Another missed opportunity, methinks, to publicise a key landmark in British music history.
