Sydney Hague was a lovely man
and liked by one and all,
a Kingstanley engine turner,
who on Sunday turned a ball.
He married his childhood sweetheart
and Charlotte was her name,
they stayed together sixty years
through tempest, sun and rain.
We recall the day
their village green
became a truly
English scene.

though a medical man by trade,
it’s with a willow, people,
his lifelong fame he made.
He hit all-comers to the boundary lines,
a sporting god of Victorian times,
until his bat came face to face
with good old Sydney in that place.
The imposing figure, so tall and stout,
met his match and he was out!
