Table top clash

A classic thriller at the Hayes Lane Stadium this afternoon, as Julie, Ben and I watched Bromley FC host Chesterfield. The visitors lead the National League by a considerable margin, but Bromley are handily placed in second and the match was always likely to be a close-fought affair.

Chesterfield took a single goal advantage into half-time courtesy of a somewhat soft penalty dispatched by seasoned pro Will Grigg, but Bromley came out firing and swiftly equalised through a scrambled effort by main striker Michael Cheek. (Highlights are available on YouTube).

Bromley then took the lead for the first time through another close range finish by Cheek, however the visitors midfielder Ollie Banks – in my opinion the best player on the park – equalised with a memorable long range effort from around 35 yards.

This was followed by a third from Chesterfield via a neatly taken header by Naylor from a corner. But Bromley were not to be beaten and Cheek scored his third in the 86th minute. Excitement in the home stands reached its zenith when home striker Woods steered a cross from the right into the Chesterfield net in the 94th minute.

A great second half and a fitting way to mark my 65th birthday weekend. Well done Bromley!
