Brendan Barber was given a rousing send off at the event to mark his retirement as TUC General Secretary last night. Many leading lights of the union movement were on hand, both past and present, with speech givers including Ed Miliband, Frances O’Grady – soon to take over Brendan’s mantle – and TUC President, Lesley Mercer of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy. Daily Mirror editor Kevin Maguire hosted an entertaining ‘This is your life’ style celebration of Brendan’s working life, which featured video clips from business names including Governor of the Bank of England, Mervyn King.
