On Friday afternoon I could be found alongside stand installer Neil Davies at the London Drum Show setting up the MU promo materials in preparation for meeting the drumming and percussion community over the weekend at Kensington’s Olympia.
This year our stand was in the new ‘quiet’ zone on level 3, away from the noisy bustle of the retail area a floor below. I was joined by MU National Organiser Dave Webster and activist Amy Doyley on Saturday, plus Amy and the MU’s Annie Turner on Sunday. We were handily positioned alongside the Masterclass room and a short hop from the Main Stage, on which several leading lights would be performing, including Andy Gangadeen, Mel Gaynor, Joe Clegg, Adam Marcello, Jimmy Chamberlin and Kaz Rodriguez. This gave photographer Jonathan Stewart some great opportunities to capture a series of dynamic pictures on the first day.
We welcomed numerous members and prospective members on both open days, including former Style Council and Who drummer Steve White, 1980s’ pop star Leee John, journalist Geoff Nicholls, rising star Ollie of Sourkix, Colin Woolway, Pete Cater and Dave’s guest, Steve Gilbertson.
All of the stages attracted long queues, with Aaron Spears proving the most popular ticket amongst his peers. A particular highlight for me was the closing performance on Sunday evening by Dexter Hercules, who impressed with his energised version of The Flintstones’ theme.
