Falling prey

A girl is riding a northbound bus
across the river.
She could be anyone,
all by herself,
anyone of us:

Falling, falling, falling prey tonight.
Falling, falling, falling prey tonight.

Back in Hammersmith on her way home
she walks through the night.
Then she hears the footsteps,
there behind her,
and she is alone:

Falling, falling, falling prey tonight.
Falling, falling, falling prey tonight.

In a bedroom I wait for her return,
my fingers betray my concern.
My fingers betray my concern.

I tell myself it’s happened before
and it won’t be long
until she is once more
climbing the stairs
and closing the door.

Falling, falling, falling prey tonight.
Falling, falling, falling prey tonight.

Somewhere in the darkness out of sight
a girl is falling, falling prey tonight.
